"Istanbul – Not Constantinople"

Some people do believe that cities are live organisms. Basically, it is true, cities have names, they live and they have their characters. But the difference between the human and the city names it that people usually do not change their names during the life, however cities do. For instance Istanbul historically had more than 10 different names related to the era and the empire it belonged to.
Most notable of course are Byzantium, New Rome, Constantinople, Stamboul and Istanbul. Other names include Lygos for the period between 13 and 11 centuries BC, Augusta Antonia, name given by the Romans, and some Ottoman names like Dersaadet, Deraliye, Bab-i Ali and others. The last name change for this city was in 1928 from Constantinople to Istanbul, however in some parts of the world people still use the old name. Regarding this event the song “Istanbul not Constantinople” was written by Americans. The lyrics are quite ironic, including rows “Why did Constantinople get the works? That’s nobody’s business but the Turks” and “you can’t go back to Constantinople”, this is why for example if you are going to rent apartment in Istanbul, you should search exactly Istanbul, as this is the really Turkish name that is also Islamic. However, in some countries the name of the city is still confusing. For example in Russian the name of the city is Stambul, based on the Arabic form.
Such confusion of all the past and present names is not a wonder for a city with such a reach history as Istanbul. It’s not important how you call it, until you understand each other with a person you are talking to. Another fact is that apartment rental Istanbul allows feeling the spirit of the city better than life in the hotel does, but be careful with choosing the district of the city in order to get what you really want, since the city is simply enormous.
